Dont crash in your job, change it!

Don’t crash in your job, change it! Have you ever noticed after those first few months (or perhaps even years) in a new job, you find yourself settling into a comfortable, relaxing pattern? While comfort in one’s job is a good thing, it can quickly become monotonous and, boring. What if, instead, you were constantly on the lookout for any new possibility available to you? Rather than falling into this comfortable routine, where you’re ‘cruising’ and spending each work day stuck on auto-pilot, you continuously considered whether you are excelling your job, if the conditions are right for you and if you are not trapped in a ‘dead end’? If you think it’s time for the next challenge in your ever-evolving career, here are some job change tips to help you get started. You don’t have to work at the same company throughout your entire career It is very rare nowadays to stay in the same company throughout ones career. So, instead of waiting to be offered (or forced to change), deploy your antennas, open your eyes and ears and be on for any new opportunity. It doesn’t even need to be in the industry you’re currently working. Each new job opening can lead to something interesting and exciting for you, even if it means changing course and moving towards a completely different career path. Don’t hesitate to call on your network of peers, including current and former colleagues, friends, family and mentors, to be well informed and take advantage of opportunities when they’re sure to arise. Always choose what brings you joy Ask yourself: Am I enjoying what Im doing today? Does it still excite me? Are there still surprises, new things to learn or discoveries to be made? These reflective questions are important to ask every day.   The answers will inform you on whether or not you should stay in your current position. For new opportunities you’re considering, trust your gut reaction when you are reading more about the job or during and after attending a job interview. Do you feel light and excited, or heavy and contracted? Remember, you don’t want to shift from one disheartening job to another. Think about gender equality We’re becoming more aware, conscious, outspoken on the topic of gender equality and, in particular, the disparity between wages for men and women who are doing the same job. Think about how this may apply to you in your current job. Do you suffer from unequal treatment? If you feel you aren’t being treated fairly, ask yourself if you can make a difference. This would be an excellent opportunity to evolve your activities within the same company. You can speak up without having to leave a job you would otherwise enjoy, and you may have cards to play to change mentalities and policy within the company. So, even if you eventually left, you have enacted positive change for other women employees. Of course, if they are unwilling to change, you’ll know it’s time to look for a company and position that prioritises their employees, equality and other matters you feel strongly about. Be the one who chooses and not the one who is chosen Take some time and ask yourself what you really want. Do you want interesting work, a good salary, more responsibilities?   Or maybe flexible hours, likeminded colleagues, an open work environment or a private office, or a specific company? Do you any or all of these things in your current position? If not, what else could you choose? Recognize and understand your value, your uniqueness, and everything you have accomplished so far. Don’t be modest! List your strengths, everything you bring to your business, to your colleagues and to your team. By knowing what you want and what qualities and assets you can bring to the table, you’ll know what sets you apart from other candidates and, you can pursue the job you always wanted.   Or even that higher position in your current company that you’ve been holding out for. Be aware of who you are and what you want to do. It doesn’t have to be a clear idea in your mind.   You can start with what you do not like to do and tighten the circle as you go to refine your wishes. Don’t be afraid to look beyond your current job and the industry you work in. What if you completely changed direction? What would it take to leave and go conquering new horizons? It may be end up being the job that fulfills everything you want, ticks all your boxes and truly challenges and excites you. So, don’t be afraid to make that change today. 10 Reasons Why Women Should Help Other Women - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

10 Reasons Why Women Should Help Other Women - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career “There is a special place in hell for women who dont help other women.    Madeleine Albright, former United States Ambassador to the United Nations This famed 2006 quote from Madeleine Albright to the WNBA expresses what so many women feel, and eight years later it still hits a nerve. Our modern workplace is complex and changing by the millisecond. Input comes from every direction â€" not only from our managers and co-workers, but also virtual colleagues, friends, family, and the relentlessly proliferating social media platforms. Given this landscape, does anyone really have the surefire fool-proof roadmap to guaranteed success? I certainly don’t. What I do see is that women now comprise more than 50% of the U.S. workforce and more women than men are earning college degrees. In addition, more women than ever before are joining the ranks of leadership in both companies, governments, and now sports with Becky Hammon being named the first female Assistant Coach in the NBA. Another glass ceiling is broken. Congratulations, Becky! My sincere hope is that she gets the ongoing strong support and help along the way from men and especially other women. Here are 10 reasons why it is a no-brainer for women to reject the old stereotypes and for women to help other women succeed at every level. 1. Today’s coworkers could be tomorrow’s managers. More and more women are being promoted into executive roles, so do not underestimate any colleague’s ability to rise through the ranks. Build respectful, strong and authentic relationships with everyone â€" women and men. These relationships are like money in the bank that builds interest over time. 2. You’ll make more money.  Enlist the support of female mentors who understand the ways to negotiate salary packages and have them help craft your own strategy. According to the Wharton School of Business, only 5% of women will negotiate a salary once it is offered. Why? One of the main reasons is that women fear not being liked if they negotiate. Let’s eliminate the fear and choose to like them, support them and admire them for pursuing the compensation they deserve. 3. Your powerful network will grow upward, laterally and exponentially. Men have been doing this on the golf course and at cigar bars for a long time. People do things for people, not companies.Need a new job? You will have plenty of women to call. Your son or daughter needs a job? Ditto! Need a resource fast? Shoot out a LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter message and watch how fast the answer comes back. Your network is where the real power lies. 4. Giving kudos privately and publicly is smart. Raising other women up and calling out their achievements elevates you too. In fact, it makes you look great, in part because it is done so seldom. Recognize the accomplishments of women in authentic ways and they will never forget it and others will notice too. Isn’t it nice to know that someone is noticing your hard work? Send a group email, a handwritten note, make an announcement at the staff meeting, but do something. 5. Women will like you. Be the woman who runs towards a problem, not away from it. Be the one who can be relied upon to stay late to hit a deadline and to do it with a smile and a positive attitude. Be a mentor. Speak truth to power. You are respectful, professional, discrete, and do not gossip. Do these things and you will be the woman who is not only liked but sought out when promotions are in the wind. 6. Paying it forward feels great. Women are nurturers by nature and gain gratification from feeling useful and needed. Offering help and support to another woman is still a fairly new experience for many who had been socialized to think that the way to succeed was to put your head down, stay isolated, and rise to the top by back-door manipulation. Now that more women are in charge, they see through these behaviors in a heartbeat and are opting for inclusion rather than exclusion. Train other women to be calmly assertive and direct rather than passive/aggressive. 7. It’s fun. Going out to dinner, having a spa afternoon, or working out together at the gym is not only smart business but great for friendships, not to mention chicken soup for your heart and soul. Sharing life’s problems over a meal or a treadmill can be cathartic as we allow other women to shine a light on possible solutions. Throw out the scorecards. 8. Woman are great leaders. When the U.S. government almost shut down in October 2013, the crisis was averted by a group of Democratic women who pulled together with a group of Republican women to carve out a workable compromise. Learn from the best and then be a positive role model for others. 9. Women don’t forget â€" ever. Women will forgive but they will rarely forget. It’s in the hard wiring. Think about it. If you have ever been bullied or sexually harassed, you can most likely remember where you were, what you were wearing, and what was said verbatim. Conversely, if a woman extends herself to another woman in a generous and selfless way, it will be remembered. The rewards come back in unexpected ways. You never know how these acts reverberate in the universe but bounce around they will. 10. Women helping other women is the right thing to do. While not the only factor, it is most definitely one of the major arteries on the road to success. After all, what are we all doing here if not to help one another? The old stereotypes about women are tired and frankly, boring. Life is hard. Work is hard. Let’s cut one another a break and give the overly competitive, passive/aggressive and martyr behaviors a permanent rest. It’s time. Turn on the television news to see our world that is filled with strife and one tragic story after another. As Madeleine Albright said recently, “To put it mildly, the world is a mess.” As natural leaders, women are quite used to handling messes. Let us help one another to continue the work of Madeleine Albright and make her proud of us. Author Bio Bonnie Low-Kramen  writes for Glassdoor.com.

5 Tips for Burning Fat with Carb Cycling

5 Tips for Burning Fat with Carb Cycling Whether you already ride a bike or want to start as part of a healthy lifestyle or exercise regime, you can use your time on two wheels productively to lose fat and gain muscle with carb cycling. Online bike retailer, Formby Cycles tell you what you need to know: What is Carb Cycling? In the simplest terms, carb cycling is a method of adapting your carbohydrate intake to suit exercise levels so that you can maintain energy, burn fat and build muscle. When you exercise, your body needs carbs to give it energy but by loading carbs on the days you work the hardest, you can make your body use those carbs efficiently. This doesn’t mean altering your overall calorie intake dramatically, though it’s wise to cut down on fats, it means structuring your diet to include a mix of high and low carb days. Tip 1: Get a real understanding of your dietary intake by using an App like MyFitnessPal. See the top fitness apps for 2016. What are the Benefits of Carb Cycling? A low-carb diet is often the first port of call for anyone looking to shift a few pounds, but while it certainly works, it can deplete your energy stores to make your workout performance weak, focus poor and metabolism sluggish. Plus, after a few days or weeks it can just become really tedious. This will make any cycling regime difficult to maintain. With carb cycling, you combine exercise with a diet that has a carb count which varies by day. The benefit is that you don’t feel physically or psychologically robbed of the carbohydrates you crave, you’re able to sustain solid performance levels and you can force your metabolism into action. On high carb days, your body will have the energy it needs to work hard, grow muscle mass and store the glycogen necessary for recovery. Try to make your most challenging rides on these days. On low carb days, workouts may feel like hard work but the results make it worthwhile. Without the energy from carbs, your body is forced to burn fat stores but with this method, it won’t deplete muscle mass. Plus, as you build muscles up, they will continue to burn calories efficiently while you rest. Tip 2: Keeping your bike rides varied will help maintain motivation and generate the best results.   What are the Disadvantages of Carb Cycling? To get the best results from your carb cycling regime you need to think about your dietary intake and organise your exercise regime carefully. Prepare to do some serious planning. Also, be prepared for weight fluctuations as you may gain water weight on high carb days. This can easily be mistaken for increased fat which can be discouraging but don’t worry, this will dissipate on the low carb days. Tip 3: Fat loss may be the aim but between muscle gain and water weight fluctuations, weighing yourself is an inadequate measure of success. Make a record of your measurements and take photos of yourself, then put them away somewhere for four weeks. Carb cycling works, you will feel the results and see them clearly if you don’t obsess about monitoring them too much. What Kind of Carbs Are Best? There are two types of carb: simple and complex and for the best carb cycling results, you need a diet rich in protein and complex carbohydrates. Broken down by the body into glucose, they give you stable energy and blood sugar levels, an active metabolism and improved brain function. They also help you to feel full after eating, making it easier to avoid cravings and snacks. Just some examples include sweet potato, couscous and kidney beans but you can find an extensive list of healthy foods at Body for Life. Tip 4: Keep your diet interesting by getting creative with your cooking. There are thousands of free recipes online so step out of your comfort zone and try some new foods. How Important is the Bike? Carb cycling is as easy as riding a bike, right? Not necessarily. It all depends on how good your bike is. To maintain an exercise regime your bike should be comfortable, have the drivetrain you need to ride efficiently on the terrain of your choice and be something you actually want to get out there and ride. Tip 5: Buy the best possible bike you can on your budget You can get great advice on choosing the right bike for your carb cycling workouts, online or instore from the friendly team at Formby Cycles. Finding Big Mama - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Finding Big Mama - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Davita is an American company that does dialysis. They have about 2,000 clinics all over America where 160,000 patients come to get dialysis 3 times a week. If you know someone with failing kidneys, you know that getting dialysis is incredibly tough physically. However, dialysis is what keeps you alive. If you cant get your treatments, after just a few days your body shuts down and you die. This became critical after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. Remember, this is what the city looked like at the time and many patients couldnt get to the Davita clinics for their treatment: Davita employee Brian Applewhite describes one attempt to locate a patient: The first thing we did after the storm was start looking for our patients, and I literally had to cut through trees to find them. There was one lady that we called Mrs. B. She lived in a low-income area, and I was walking through the streets screaming her name, but no one was responding. I remembered that she once told me that people called here Big Mama, so I tried screaming that. They pointed me to the house with the big tree on it! Big Mama hadnt dialyzed in three days, and when I walked in, she said she thought shed seen a ghost. Brian got her to dialysis in time and she made it. Two things stand out to me about this story. First, that an employee will go to such length for a customer. Going out into post-hurricane New Orleans must have been scary to say the least. But also, the reason he found Mrs. B. at all was that he knew her well enough personally to know that she was also called Big Mama. He had a relationship with her that was more than just transactional it was personal. I hear many stories of employees being good human beings in the course of their work and this one is another great example. Have you ever heard of or done something similar at work? Let me know in a comment. Thanks for visiting my blog. If you're new here, you should check out this list of my 10 most popular articles. 7 Tips for Creating a Minimalist Office Space

7 Tips for Creating a Minimalist Office Space What do you need in order to deliver your best work? A clear mind, space to work, and a positive energy that makes you believe you can achieve what you’re setting out to achieve! While creating an environment that caters to all these requests might seem difficult, there’s one tried and tested method that makes it possible, and that is: creating a minimalist office. You’ve likely read about how you can turn your home into a minimalist haven, but how does it work in the office? We take a look at seven ways to incorporate this philosophy into your workspace. Go Paperless It’s hard to get into a relaxed mindset when piles of paper continually surround you. Remember, your mind is influenced by more than you probably realize; if you can barely see your desk because of all the paper that’s there, then you’ll find it difficult to get down to work. It’s as simple as that! Aside from making it easier to reach that clear state of mind, going paperless will bring benefits such as cost-savings, better organisation, and showing that your company has committed to improving its environmental record. Buy Only What You Need Yes, you’re going to need to have supplies in your office. Every workspace does! But do you really need three hundred of each item? Buying in bulk might save you money, but it’s making your office look and feel crowded. In any case, it’s rare that an office makes it all the way through all the items they bought in mass. What tends to happen is this: because you know you have hundreds in reserve, you’re lax with pens, staples, pencils, and so on. You’ll take more care if you know you haven’t got a seemingly endless supply hanging around the office. Consider Flexible Working Days Your items will take up space, but they won’t compare to the people in the office. If you have a small office that’s usually packed to capacity with all your workers, consider adopting modern working practices, such as flexible working and telecommuting. This will prevent the office from always being overpopulated, which can really hinder any minimalist ambitions that you might have. The philosophy is closely linked to calmness; the fewer people that are in your office, the calmer it’s going to be it’s as simple as that. Limit the Bulky Tech In any office, you’re going to have certain technologies. They’re essential when it comes to getting the job done! However, with that being said, that doesn’t mean that you can’t incorporate technology that’s in line with the minimalist philosophy. You can! For starters, look at limiting the bulky pieces of technology. It might not be necessary to have a large desktop computer on every desk. Instead, it may be better to have a slim laptop. Aesthetically, it’s much better; functionally, it’s pretty much the same. One bulky piece of tech you might need is a machine that can print, fax, copy; it’s better to have one of these devices rather than a separate machine for every job. Get Clever With Storage It’s all good and well planning to get rid of all but your most essential items, but in reality, this won’t be possible. There are going to be things that you simply need to have. However, that doesn’t mean that they have to clutter up the place. Instead, you just need to get clever with storage. If you don’t have much space onsite, take a look at fabric buildings. They’re easy and inexpensive to put up, and can be used as a large storage unit for all those things that you need to have, but which you don’t use on a daily basis. Limit the Distractions You should have a few pieces to brighten up your office, such as a big clock, plant, and maybe a sofa, but that’s about it. Try not to go too heavy when it comes to accessories; they’ll only serve to distract you from what you’re trying to achieve. Less is More Your mind may go into overdrive when you see all the possibilities of your office. But it’s worthwhile curbing the desire to go overboard with your office. When it comes to designing the space, adopt the mantra of “less is more.” It’s much more calming to walk into an office that looks like it was thoughtfully outfitted to meet the needs of the company and nothing more, rather than a space that’s jam-packed with interesting but mind-boggling features.
